ABOUT THE SERVICE

Who is this service for?

The Sanctuary’s Easter Sonrise Service is for anyone who would like to celebrate Easter outdoors with a beautiful mountaintop view!

You’ll see old and young… children running around, dogs on leashes, couples, individuals, and families gathered together as the sun crests the mountain and we celebrate the risen Saviour!

Whether you’re brand new to faith, coming back after a long time, or have been in church your whole life, you are absolutely welcome here.

Where is the Sonrise Service located?

We gather at the Pioneer Pavillion on Knox Mountain - it is the second pavilion as you drive up Knox Mountain Drive.

There will be signage and friendly faces to help you find your way.

What time does the service start, and how long is it?

The Sonrise Service begins at 8:00am on Easter Sunday, and typically runs 50-60 minutes.

For the best experience, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes to allow time for parking and the short walk to the Pavillion.

What happens if it rains or the weather is poor?

The Pavillion is covered, so we will still hold the service if it’s lightly raining or the weather isn’t perfect.

In the event of more extreme weather, the service will be moved to The Sanctuary’s facility (4091 Lakeshore Road). In that event, signs will be posted at the Knox Mountain vehicle entrance, a member of our team will be there to redirect you. Information will also be updated on our social media channels.

Is this the same message as the 10:30 service at the church?

Both services celebrate the hope and resurrection of Jesus, but the experiences are different.

The Sonrise Service and the 10:30am Celebration Service each have a different speaker, worship team, music, and service elements. You are welcome to attend either service… or both!

Will the Service be Live-streamed or Recorded?

No, our Easter Sonrise Service will not be streamed or recorded in its entirety.

WHAT TO BRING/WEAR

What should I wear?

Dress for the weather. This is an outdoor service in the early morning, so layers are a great idea.

It’s a casual setting, so come as you are comfortable… whether that is your “Sunday best” or sweaters, winter jackets, toques and scarves. Easter on a mountain is beautiful… but can be chilly!

Should I bring a lawn chair or blanket?

You are welcome to sit or stand during the service.

Should you choose to sit, you are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. A blanket is also a great idea, either to sit on or to help keep you warm.

Is seating provided?

We provide a limited number of chairs for those who are unable to bring their own. If you are planning to sit and you‘re able to bring your own chair, that is helpful and appreciated.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, well-behaved dogs are welcome to join us. We ask that they remain on leash at all times and you clean up after them.

Please note that because this is an outdoor public park, other visitors, dogs, and the occasional deer or squirrel may pass by. If your dog becomes disruptive or starts barking, we kindly ask that you step away from the worship area for a few moments so others may continue to worship without distraction.

FAMILIES & KIDS

Is there programming for children?

While there isn’t any formal programming for children during this service, it is family-friendly and children are welcome and encouraged to join! They can sing, move around, and enjoy the outdoor experience alongside you.

Plus… children ages 12 and under will receive a take-home easter egg as a special treat!

Is the service family-friendly?

Absolutely! The Sonrise Service includes singing, a short skit, and a hopeful Easter message that is engaging for all ages. It’s designed so families can worship together in a relaxed and joyful setting.

Is there space for strollers?

Yes, the outdoor Pavillion has plenty of open space, so strollers can be accommodated without issue.

ARRIVAL, PARKING, & ACCESSIBILITY

How early should I arrive?

We recommend arriving between 7:30-7:45am. The drive from the bottom of Knox Mountain (at the north end of Ellis Street) to the Pavillion parking lot takes approximately 10 minutes. Once parked, the walk from the parking lot to the Pavillion takes a couple of minutes.

Where should I park?

Our Parking Volunteers will happily direct you to the parking lot. If needed, the driver can drop passengers at the designated “drop-off zone” before finding a parking spot.

Will there be volunteers to direct us?

Yes! You will find volunteers at the bottom of Knox Mountain to guide you through the check-point. You’ll also find signage along Knox Mountain Drive, and volunteers are clearly visible at the Pavillion and parking areas to help you.

Is the service accessible for those with mobility challenges?

Knox Mountain Drive is paved, and the parking lots are dirt lots. There is a short 2-minute walk from the parking lot to the Pavillion. A “drop-off zone” is available for those who are may have difficulty with the walk.

Please note that the path to the Pavillion is a dirt path with uneven ground. If you have specific mobility concerns, please contact the church office for guidance and support.

I thought Knox Mountain was closed to vehicles during this time of year?

Thanks to the City of Kelowna, The Sanctuary has been granted a special license to host our Easter Sonrise Service at Knox Mountain. We follow a very specific set of guidelines for this event, so please ensure to adhere to the posted speed limit, and any instructions given from church staff and volunteers.

SOUND & PARTICIPATION

Will there be live music?

Yes! Our Worship Team from The Sanctuary will lead us with live music to guide our time of worship together.

Will the service be amplified so everyone can hear?

Absolutely. Both our Worship Team and speakers are amplified through a speaker system so that all visitors can hear the music and message clearly.

Will the words to songs be available?

Yes! We provide a songbook with lyrics to all the worship songs, as well as an order of service, so you can follow along and join in singing.
